If this is your first time flying to Cancun, organizing transportation from Cancun Airport to Cancun Hotel Zone upon arrival may not be the best idea. It can be a bit overwhelming when you walk out of the airport and are surrounded by taxi drivers and others trying to sell you a ride, often at inflated prices. To avoid this stress, it’s a good idea to arrange your transportation beforehand. Read on for tips and tricks to a stress-free start to your tropical vacation.
Transportation to and From Cancun Airport
No matter which Caribbean coast resort in Mexico you’re heading to, you’ll most likely land at Cancun Airport. This airport is located 10.5 miles (17 km) from the city center, right at the exit of the Hotel Zone. Although it might seem far, the distance is manageable. A shuttle bus covers this distance in about 35 minutes, traffic permitting. If you’re heading to Playa del Carmen, the distance is 35 miles (56 km) and the bus ride will take around an hour, give or take. Cancun Airport has four terminals handling both domestic and international flights. Each terminal has a bus stop, a taxi stand, and other types of transportation options nearby. Let’s review all transportation options from Cancun Airport to Cancun Hotel Zone, starting with the cheapest – the bus.
The Bus
The cheapest and the most hassle-free way to get from the airport to downtown Cancun or the Hotel Zone, and vice versa, is by taking the ADO bus. Why hassle-free? Because you don’t have to deal with scammy airport taxis. You don’t have to “negotiate” your fare. You simply buy your ticket and you are on your way.
Transportation From Cancun Airport to Cancun Hotel Zone
ADO is the only bus company operating at the airport, and they stop at each airport terminal. All buses are in good condition, with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and drivers in white shirts. Of course, there is a luggage compartment. The buses are easy to spot, because they are red with a white ADO logo.
And guess what? These buses have just become even more convenient. Very recently, they launched a new route directly to the Hotel Zone. Transportation From Cancun Airport to Cancun Downtown
The buses from the airport to Cancun downtown run every 30 minutes from 1:00 AM until almost midnight. In the other direction, from the ADO terminal in downtown Cancun to the airport, buses depart every 30 minutes, 24/7. The new ADO bus route from Cancun Airport to the Hotel Zone departs from terminals 2, 3, and 4, and connects to Plaza Fiesta in the Hotel Zone. Buses run every two hours between 10:25 a.m. and 9 :25 p.m. and the ride takes about 40 minutes.
How to Buy Your Tickets?
There are several ways to buy your ADO tickets. Let’s review them all indivisually.
Buying Your Tickets Through the Ado Website or App
If you are buying your tickets up front, you can do that through their official website or mobile app. (Download for Apple users. Download for Android users.)
DROPPING SOME WISDOM: We don’t recommend doing that in advance. If you are travelling internationally, which you probably are, you will need to go through passport control and customs. Then you may need to claim your checked luggage. All these things may take time. Should you spend more time than you expected on these things, your ticket turns into a pumpkin. Whenever we arrive in Cancun, we always buy our tickets at the airport in the ADO ticket booth after all the formalities. There have always been seats available.
Navigating the ADO website schedule can be a bit tricky if you are buying your tickets through the desktop version of their website. It is not exactly user friendly, because you’ll see two “Cancun” options along with the three Cancun Airport terminals. This can be confusing for some people. If you select “Cancun Q.R.” with the city icon as your destination, the website will show you all the ADO bus stops in all of Cancun.
Alternatively, choosing the plain “Cancun” option with the bus logo refers only to the central ADO bus station in Downtown Cancun, which is the final stop if you’re coming from the airport. With all this being said, they do have a mobile app which makes ticket purchasing more streamlined.
If you buy your ticket on the official ADO website or through the app, it will be sent to you via email. There’s no need to print the ticket; you can simply show it to the bus driver on your phone screen.
Buying Your Tickets at the Airport Upon Arrival
At the airport, ADO kiosks are available in each terminal. Look out for red banners with white ADO logo on them. Additionally, there are ticket counters outside the airport building near the bus boarding area. You can pay with cash (preferably MXN, as USD may not always be accepted) or with a bank card at both locations. The one-way fare to Cancun downtown or the Hotel Zone is 140 MXN (around $7).
However, if you purchase tickets online through the official ADO website, you can often get discounts. Children aged 5 to 12 pay 50% of the fare. Children under 5 travel free as long as they don’t occupy a separate seat. Occasionally, you may be asked to show the child’s documents. The final stop in Cancun downtown is the Central Bus Terminal, also known as the ADO terminal. The travel time is around 35-40 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Once You Arrive in Downtown Cancun, What’s Next?
Buses to Cancun downtown run more frequently than the new Hotel Zone route. So if you don’t want to go to the airport for the next Hotel Zone ADO bus, jump on one of the buses to Cancun downtown. After arriving at the ADO terminal in Cancun downtown, you’re ready to continue your journey to your hotel in the Hotel Zone or your Airbnb. If you’re traveling light and looking for a budget-friendly option, consider taking a city bus.
How to Get To Hotel Zone from Cancun Downtown?
To get to the Hotel Zone from the downtown ADO terminal, cross the boulevard in front of the terminal and turn right towards the overhead walkway. You don’t need to cross the walkway; just walk past it for about 100 meters (110 yards). There, you’ll find a city bus stop for route R-1/R-2. Look for a bus with a “Hotel Zone” sign on the windshield. City buses run every few minutes, 24/7 (well, with a break from around 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM). The fare is 12 MXN ($0.60) and it takes about 40 minutes to reach the farthest hotel in the Hotel Zone.
If you’re traveling with a lot of luggage, the bus might not be the most convenient option as it can get quite crowded. Instead, you can take a taxi, which costs around 50-70 MXN ($2.50-$3.90) within Cancun and at least 120 MXN ($6) to the Hotel Zone. If you have the Uber app on your phone, use it! Uber has been operating legally and smoothly in Cancun since 2023 (with a few nuances, which we’ll cover below). We suggest walking a bit away from the ADO terminal before calling your Uber.
Another great local option for transportation from Cancun downtown to Cancun Hotel Zone is the DiDi app, which you can download before your trip. You can also hail a taxi anywhere by simply raising your hand. However, be sure to agree on the fare with the driver beforehand, as taxi meters are rarely used in Cancun. Keep in mind that taxi drivers may not have change for large bills.
The Taxi
Navigating taxi services from the Cancun airport can be a bit tricky because of the local taxi monopoly. Right now, calling a taxi to the airport is not an option. No mobile taxi service is allowed to pick up passengers from the airport, though they can drop you off there. (Uber is in talks with the authorities in Quintana Roo to get an official license to operate at the airport, but for now, you still can’t call a taxi to the airport through the app).
Taxi drivers at the airport often overcharge, so be prepared to negotiate. Typically, they’ll quote you around US$60 or more to get to downtown Cancun. If you’re persistent, you might manage to bring the price down a bit, but most drivers will probably stick to their high rates.
We highly recommend using the official airport taxi service for a smooth and hassle-free experience. It’s a good idea to book your ride in advance and online. You can arrange for a one-way trip or a round trip. While there’s a kiosk for this service at the airport, it might not always be open, or they might not have any available cars. To avoid any inconvenience, we suggest booking your transportation at least a day before your arrival in Cancun. You can check out the rates and make reservations on their official website.
The ride from the airport to Cancun’s Hotel Zone typically takes around 25-30 minutes, depending on traffic and the location of your hotel. In Cancun, you have the convenience of using the Uber app or the local taxi service, Didi. Plus, you can easily hail a taxi right off the street.
Just like at the airport, mobile taxi services in the Hotel Zone can only drop you off, not pick you up. However, you can easily catch a taxi on the street. They often wait near hotels and restaurants, and if a free taxi drives by, the driver might give a quick honk to let you know they’re available.
Be aware, though, that these taxis will most definitely overcharge you. The minimum fare for a ride within the Hotel Zone is 150 MXN (about $8). A trip to the airport will cost at least 500 MXN (around $28). However, if you’re heading to the airport from the main part of Cancun, it can be as low as 170 MXN ($9,5).
Getting around the Hotel Zone is a breeze with the R-1 and R-2 city buses, costing just 12 MXN ($0,70). These buses run frequently and cover the entire Hotel Zone. Plus, Cancun recently updated its bus fleet, so you can enjoy a comfortable ride with air conditioning on the new buses.
Hotel Transfer
When planning your trip to Cancun, booking a hotel transfer service to handle your transportation from Cancun Airport to Cancun Hotel Zone through your hotel or a well-known transfer company is one of the best ways to ensure a smooth and stress-free arrival. This option offers unparalleled convenience, especially after a long flight. Imagine stepping off the plane, breezing through customs, and finding a friendly driver waiting for you, ready to whisk you away to your hotel. There’s no need to navigate crowded public transportation or haggle with taxi drivers.

While booking a hotel transfer service might be more expensive than other transportation options from Cancun Airport to Cancun Hotel Zone, the peace of mind and ease it provides can be well worth the cost for many people. Car Rental
If you prefer to drive even while on vacation, consider renting a car at the airport. Any international driver’s license will do. You’ll find almost all the well-known rental companies here (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, etc.), with their kiosks conveniently located just outside the arrivals area in each terminal.
A Few Tips:
- Check Return Options
Make sure you can return the car at a different location from where you picked it up. For instance, many companies let you pick up a car at the airport and return it in downtown Cancun. - Be Ready for a Deposit Hold
Expect a deposit to be blocked on your credit card. Cash deposits are rarely accepted, and the amount depends on the car model. Don’t worry—the deposit will be released within the specified period, usually after confirming there are no fines. - Insurance
Car rentals usually include liability insurance, so you’re ready to hit the road. If you need additional coverage, you can use your own insurance policy or buy it from the rental company. Just be aware that buying it from the rental company might not always be the cheapest option. - Check the Fuel and Condition
Make sure the tank is full because you’ll need to return the car with a full tank. Also, inspect the car for any body or interior defects, and check all the electronics and features.
