Things To Do On Isla Mujeres

About Isla Mujeres

Just off the coast of Cancun, Mexico there is a charming island paradise called Isla Mujeres. Its name means ‘Island of Women’—pretty intriguing, right? We’ll circle back to that story in a bit.

Known for its stunning turquoise waters, pristine white sandy beaches, and vibrant local culture, Isla Mujeres is the perfect getaway for those looking to experience the beauty and tranquility of the Caribbean.

Isla Mujeres is located just 7.5 miles (12 km) off the coast of the Mexican resort city of Cancun. The small island is about 4 miles (6.5 km) long and 546 yards (650 m) wide, making it easy to explore. Despite its size, Isla Mujeres boasts an impressive array of attractions and activities for visitors.

This picturesque island offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich history. From the colorful downtown area filled with shops, restaurants, and lively bars, to breathtaking cliffs and ancient Mayan ruins, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Statue of Goddess Ixchel in Isla Mujeres More than 1,500 years ago, Isla Mujeres held great significance for the Mayan people as a sacred site dedicated to Ixchel (pronounced as ‘Ish-Chel’), the Goddess of the Moon, water, fertility, and medicine. The island boasted a temple that doubled as a lighthouse, where torches shone through the walls to guide sailors. Beyond its spiritual significance, the island was also a hub for salt harvesting. Discovered by Francisco Fernández de Córdoba in 1517, there are tales that the island was inhabited solely by Ixchel’s priestess, her devotees, and numerous statues of the Goddess, inspiring its name: Isla Mujeres, or the Island of Women.

Isla Mujeres is the ideal spot for an unforgettable day trip from Cancun. Just a short ferry ride away, this island paradise is easily accessible with ferries (by Ultramar or Xcaret), running every 30 minutes/1 hour from early morning until late evening.

For a hassle-free adventure, or if you’re short on time, book a catamaran tour and let everything be arranged for you. Experience the beauty and charm of Isla Mujeres (and an open bar!), and make the most of this tropical haven.

Snorkel at the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA)

Beyond just soaking up the sun and enjoying the waves, the island is a prime spot for snorkeling and diving. It is one more of the things you can do in Isla Mujeres. For instance, a must-see is the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), located near the island’s southern tip. Here, you can explore hundreds of submerged statues that serve both as art and artificial reefs.

MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) features three underwater zones: Manchones, Punta Nizuc, and Punta Sam. Over 500 monumental sculptures made from sustainable concrete are installed on the ocean floor. Over time, these sculptures have become home to algae and marine life. Whether you go snorkeling or take a ride in a glass-bottom boat, you’ll be amazed by the artists’ unique vision. This unforgettable experience is unlike any other, as there are very few museums like this in the world.

Enjoy Kayaking, Paddleboarding or Ziplining

For those who prefer staying above water, Isla Mujeres is perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding.

Most of these fun activities are located closer to the southern tip of Isla Mujeres.

Garrafon Eco-Park

Garrafon Park is a natural reef park which offers a variety of recreational and relaxing activities. It has a small private beach that you can access by paying an entrance fee (starting at 1,000 pesos) that specifically includes lounge chairs, umbrellas, 3 zip lines, an oceanfront pool, kayaks and snorkeling equipment.

Named after the Garrafon reefs, this park offers a stunning underwater world filled with diverse marine life. Garrafón is part of the longest coral reef in the northern hemisphere and hosts a rich ecosystem. It’s perfect for snorkeling, thanks to its shallow coral reef waters and vibrant, beautiful fish.

You can also enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking along scenic trails, zip-lining over the sea, kayaking, and swimming with dolphins. One of the park’s highlights is a tour along the cliffs of Punta Sur, where you’ll explore a sculpture garden, visit a lighthouse, and see temple ruins dedicated to the Mayan goddess Ixchel.

Garrafon Park also features a traditional indigenous steam bath, known as a temazcal, and a relaxing panoramic pool surrounded by lounge chairs and hammocks. You can also just relax in hammocks among the palm trees and enjoy lunch in a restaurant.

Garrafón de Castilla Beach Club

Right next to Garrafón Park, you’ll discover Garrafón de Castilla Beach Club—a more affordable, less crowded, and quieter option. While it’s not a luxury spot, it’s perfect for a budget-friendly visit to Isla Mujeres. This simple beach club offers the same stunning waters for swimming or snorkeling, a restaurant, and all the basic amenities you need to enjoy your day (lounge chairs, lockers, and showers).

The entrance fee is about 150 pesos or $8 USD, which includes snorkel equipment rental and locker use. Just a heads-up: they only accept cash, so make sure to bring some pesos with you.

Kin Ha Restaurant

Another great spot near Punta Sur is the beautiful oceanfront restaurant Kin Ha, which serves both American and Mexican cuisine. Catch live music, sunsets & delicious meals all day at the bar. The restaurant features multiple decks with sea views, perfect for savoring your food and drinks.

Kin Ha also offers three swimming pools: a kids’ pool with a water slide, an infinity pool, and an adult pool with a swim-up bar. For those who love water activities, they provide snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding gear for use in the bay. Plus, there’s an in-water trampoline and a rope swing for some added rather splashy fun.

If relaxation is more your style, you can just chill on one of their loungers on the dock while enjoying your meal and drinks by the pool. Kin Ha lets lets you linger, opening late for island sunsets.

Fascinatingly, this location marks the easternmost point in Mexico. There’s an adventurous walking trail available, featuring some steep stairs and areas without railings. We managed just fine, though, and were consequently rewarded with stunning views that were absolutely worth the effort.
